REMEMBER WHEN

Last issue, we asked where the “White Horse Inn” was located. Every good
question usually has a better answer. The Inn was located where the Winding
Brook Country Club now stands. Naturally it has a direct relationship with
Elkdom. Edwin J. Folz, now deceased, and at one time an Exalted Ruler and
then State Vice President was the owner. He had two sons who were Elks,
John or better known as “Jack” who passed away prematurely several years
ago and Edwin D. Folz who has been an Elk for 54 years as of this writing.
He also served as a Trustee for many years. Ed’s wife Kit was a charter
member of the Ladies Auxiliary and active in many Lodge activities. The
daughter, Jean Folz Gazzera was President of our Ladies Auxiliary and
active in helping the Lodge in many ways. Her husband Fred Gazzera is also
an Elk of 54 years and has served on so many committees that we could not
recount them here. The third generation of the Folz family is now
represented in Elkdom by Jim Folz who has been an Elk for 8 years. Ed, who
has cooked more meals for the Lodge than we could ever count, says his
Father’s place was renowned for its food and he believes there was a 9 hole
golf course on the premises. Now you know the “whole” story or at least a
good part of it.
In 1971 bowling was booming at the Lodge. We had 151 bowlers who bowled
five nights a week. Ange Tamburro and Ken Sheffer were co-chairmen of the
Bowling Committee. Some of the more “notorious” bowlers of the time were:
Bill “Red” Miller, Skip Speer,Sam Agins, John Grandinetti, “Shipwreck”
Clark, John Qualtieri, Tony Bucci, Frank Hamblet, Sam Murell, Fred Gazzera,
Rog Burdick, Moses Sweetgall, Tony DeLuke, Danny Hayes, Bob Brenzel, Red
Ressler Frank Melino, Pete Leggieri, John Pryshlak, Jim Phillips(ER), Dom
Conte, Bardis Davi, Harpy Shea and Mike Finn Jr. Let’s hope that bowling
can once more reach that level of participation and fun!
